Blog for filming of Silent Movie with Rob/ Media Students 18th january 2016.

What did we do? we filmed the silent movie based on the theme ''horror'' in any syle or form such as: Comedy, Thriller, Sc-fi action ect. My group decide to bring the characters from their story together but we had to change again a liitle as Maya another person inour class joined our group which meant we had to change it slightly but still made sure it fitted in with what we originally decided to do.

Also our play was about a master and an bad devil and a good angel . The Master told the bad devil to sacrifice a human Sophie and her friend Nancy and toturn her friend to Zombie and bring her back to life, while the angel tries to stop the plan from happening. The next part is they in Sophies house she is having a bad dream and wakes up from the night mare later finding her friend sitting beside her asking her if she is alright then asks her to bring some water. She then gets it and while she is in the kitchen, the bad devil and the good angel have a argument then at which point the devil gets a box and opens it and puts a spell on the angel he then turns to an animal and my friend to a zombie. While i go crawling round the back of the sofa and escape btu then...
get caught by the bad devil and my friend the zombie and the angel is dead. When they find me they bring me back to the Master which was the exact thing they planned but then thinking i was safe they survived, i was turned to a zombie and got killed by the badies chopping my head off.

How did we do it? We did it by using a green screen for the black and white filming and special effects and the second location was the house in which we filmed the escape and my friend turned to a zombie and the angel getting killed. We had help from the Media Students filming on the cameras from different angles and heights to get head shots and full shots for example when i was running or escaping the house, and examples of head shots was when Darcey and me turned to Zombies and turned our heads on screen.

What worked? What worked was when we went from Darcey's character getting the water to the argument and escape becuase even though i was crwling across the focus was on the argument so only the audience would that i was crawling across but the characters would not have a clue when i escaped and how. Also the end and beggining were the same except i was caught at the end and my friend but not at the start and the end was mostly the same as we were all equal leveled but at the start they were all seated which showed a change in level and status as not all the characters were the same from start to finish. Also the film order was in a sequence but not during the filming process.

What didn't? What did not work was the part with the water as we were not sure were it would fit in during the getting of the water and the fight and escape scene of if we had to slightly change or adjust some scenes so it all fitted like a puzzle or made sense what was happening throughout the film and so it made sense from what the audience were seeing or their own perspective. Otherwise everything connected well.

What feedback did we recieve? The only peices of feedback we reiceved were to make it smaller not bigger so it is cinema like not theatrical. Also just go with it and improvise if you are not sure what to say and the last thing was we have to change it so it makes more sense for the audience when they watch and when directing it we are not making it look bad but are just helping you and the directors to to guide you and make sure you know what you are doing and make it look good and proffesional when filming it.

How is it developing my skill? It is developing my skills because it is showing us how it feels or how different it is being on stage to filming close ups or shots on a real digital camera which makes the acting and the way you speak or respond to things as a actress/or playing the characters role different. Also the techniques you learns are different and the people you work with act differently or expect different things from you. You do not need project you voice as much as the camera picks up the sound mor easily as in a theatre the room/ space is bigger and their is a live audience that needs to be able to understand what you are saying clearly enough.

Silent movie research For Rob's Drama Lesson

What time period are we looking at for the world of silent movies?

The time period we are looking for in the world of silent movies began around the pre 20's with the greatest films showing but actually in a matter of fact they  really showed the first glimpse of films around roughly 1891 which were shown or produced without any sound. But the last ones were not shown or released until 1931 even though they ended actually at the end of the 1920 period which they expected was going  to end then but stayed a bit longer.

What were the biggest films of that period and why do you think they were so successful?

Some of the greatest films of the period included silent movies such as City lights , sunrise, Nosferatus, The Gold Rush, The Lodger, The General, The artist and many more. The reason the films were so successful was because the people who played the roles of those characters played them in an entertaining and funny way and made their use of gestures big and over exaggerated so they look good on the  big screens for the audience watching. They also had the music go in sink with what they are doing when jumping of walls or houses or doing other dangerous things to bring more tension to the film and make the audience feel more emotion and get more hits or popular in the box office and divert audience attention from their own misery because they lived in hard times.

Who were some of the biggest stars in that period?

Greta Garbo was one of the biggest stars because the film had been inspired by real-life lovers. She had became much more successful when her first sound film was announced In public places “Garbo talks!”. She produced a film in Sweden and a second one in Germany before arriving in Hollywood. The cameras loved her a lot and she produced 10 silent films in five years.

Another popular star in that period was Charlie Chaplin who became one of the biggest stars because he had turned into a music hall star after his overnight success 1914. Becoming one of the most inventive director stars in Hollywood. But most of all his tramp personality , bowler hat, baggy trousers, outsize boots, moustache, funny walk and the rest made him the most famous man who ever lived and of course to mention one of the richest of that decade or even era. After making a number of shorts, he produced feature films in his own studio, most famously films known as The Kid, The Gold Rush and City Lights, but most of all was the only film-maker able to ignore the coming of sound. A amazing person or actor as he’s among the greatest artists in history of that period.

Another important character or actor I have to mention most certainly is Harold Lloyd who was one of the biggest stars because he entered films when he was a teenager at the fun factories which was run by Hal Roach and Mack Sennett. In 1917 invented a screen persona that lasted him for a while. His personality was slightly naïf middle-class and a go-getter wearing a suit, tie, boater and horn-rimmed glasses. He owned the things he produced and became rich because of it. In his best, most famous movie, the magnificent Safety Last (1923), he plays an accident-prone small-town boy in New York.

Now the very last character I will mention is Buster Keaton who was another one of the biggest stars in silent films because on stage from the age of three Joseph Frank Keaton  was the youngest, most cinematically inventive and endearing of Hollywood. He produced three of the greatest silent comics and the only one to experience post-stardom obscurity. His films were discovered by many people and his reputation had been restored in the 1960s.From then onwards Buster was the determined and dedicated. His finest films or the best ones he produced were The Play House (1921), Sherlock Jr (1924) and the railroad epic The General (1926).

what socially was taking place around the world at that time and did it have any significance on the film industry? (1920's)

What took place socially around the world at that time (1920's) was The Great Depression and the Walls Street Crash and the significance or affect it had on the film industry in that time was The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to the early 1940s which meant it was hard for them to film in studios as they had no money to pay the firm or even actresses/actors which meant they were not able to become rich and become successful and live a positive life in the film industry, but most of all meant it affected the cinemas as the box offices did not get the amount of profit they needed to show the films publicly on the big screens and that they had to close or shut down when the wall street crash hit big stock markets or firms which was a severe economic downturn caused by an overly-confident, over-extended stock market and a drought that struck the South. In an attempt to end the Great Depression, the U.S. government took direct action straight away to help the economy. Despite this help, the Great Depression finally ended with the increased help needed for World War II.

But the problem with the Wall Street Crash was after nearly a long period of happiness in the USA it was thrown into problems on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929.It was the day the stock market crashed and the official beginning of the Great Depression had started. Which was causing problems as stock prices plummeted with no hope of recovery and led to a panic strucking. Masses and masses of people tried to sell their stock but no one was ever going to buy them and they were left with no hope or even thoughts of what the future would look like ahead of them. The stock market, which had appeared to be the easiest way to become rich, quickly became the path to bankruptcy.
The Stock Market Crash were just the beginning. Since many banks had also invested large portions of their savings in the stock market, these banks were forced to close when the stock market crashed.

Who directed Nosferatu? The person who directed Nosferatu was a man named  F.W. Murnau. The people who starred in the film and who played which roles were? Max Schrek (Count Orlok), Greta Schroder (Ellen Hutter), Gustav Von Wangenheim (Jonathan Harker), Alexander Granach (Renfeild), Ruth Landshoff (Annie), Georg H. Schnell (Harding), Wolfgang Heinz (Zweiter Kapitan), John Gottowt (Professor Bulwer), Max Nemetz (Kapitan Der Demeter), Gustav Botz (Proffesor Sievers).

What was the it Based on?

Norferatus was purely based on a character from a film who was a Vampire called by the name of Count Orlok who shows a true interest in a new person in the area and a estate agents Hutter's wife. The silent Movie is a classic based on the True story ''Dracula''. Another thing i want to add is the plot  is based on the novel Dracula, but it takes a lot of risks because the filmmakers didn't have the license to make the film. It's about a clerk named Thomas Hutter, who goes to Orlok's castle, and, blind as he is Orlok's obviously a vampire, even though he just read a book about it. Hutter accidentely sells a house to Orlok, who then goes to the city of Wisborg and without anyone noticing ends up going on a  killing spree. He dies slightly later on in the film when he is feeding of the blood of a pretty woman. Distracted as he is, he doesn't notice the rising sun and vanishes in a cloud of smoke.
The movie is mostly known  for the haunting atmosphere, and Orlok's presence was always frightening, even if you can only see his shadow.

Who the old man is reffering too when he says ''Master is coming'' is?

He is first of all reffering to Orlak who is hiding under the bed when he say ''Master is Coming'' to warn people of the danger they are yet to face, becuase the first thing that happens is the ship approaches in the harbour and the old man gets on the chair searching out the window and sees the ship stop but before it stops and as it arrives the Vampire comes from under the bed back from the dead ready to suck his next victims blood and is giggling away with this eary look in his eyes giving away or the audience what to excpect or what is to come next. Then the Captain walks in the house smoking on a pipe and after that the old man comes down first saying ''The master is coming '' and then attacks the captain by jumping onto his back and knocks him over and the Captain is puzzled as he thinks he is bad but in actual matter of fact he is not the bady. But on the screen it reads later That Norferatus was travelling by ship with the earth-filled coffins. I then goes on to saying I discovered that to preserve their diabolic power, Vampires must sleep during the day in the same unhallowed ground in which they had been buried. He would also mice alive in coffins which means that maybe by day he sleeps in the coffin and by night he travels with the Captain on the ships and has a way of tricking the old man in thinking he is a normal person when actually he is a Vampire who ends up killing people by sucking their blood but the only things that scare him are Garlic and Sunlight during the day.

Why would the Audience have been frightened by this?

The audience would have been frigtened by this because they would have not expected what was coming at them next the only thing that would prepare them for what was going to happen next was the music depending on the tempo of it (fast or slow) or the pitch/ tone (quiet or loud) throughout the wholew silent movie in those days but know the films are more frightening and have a different impact on the audience as we have more technology which records better sound quality and special

digital effects.

What aspects of your films have been influenced by your study  of silent movies?

The aspects of our film that have been influenced by our study of silent moves are for example a bit of Charlie Chaplin in his features and character to give us an idea in how are characters would behave or look like when we film our one. Maybe also buster keaton and Harlod Lloyd in the way they move or the energy or comedyic side they bring to influence mostly Femis ange like side and the others negative or scary side and my side and how i would react to the characters in our movie in a scared and innocent way and a bit more comedy way also.

Characters that influenced me or our Group and were very well known for silent movie acting in that era:

Monday to Friday 11th until 15th January 2016  What we did this week in Lessons?

  • On Monday I had Arlette in the morning were we started the lesson doing a spelling test and for homework rewrote words I got wrong and searched up words I was unsure of. What went well was I was eager to learn new words and if unable to understand the defition of the word or what the term of it meant we would search it up and understand it in a way I could which was a thing I need to improve.

  • In the afternoon we had Becca for tutorial were we did continuation on what we started with the posters, had a discussion and started writing scene by scene the story. What we thought went well was the discussion and enthusiasm but on the other hand what did not go so well was the concentration when we were all working as we were all full of energy and over excited. Then following that we had Drama with Rob were all the groups drew story boards with info on the bottom under the picture, we then were asked to film bits or the openings of each groups scenes so the directors had a rough idea of what the plays should look like and started/finished story scenes for Music Production and Media Students. What went well was the preparation or amount of work we showed or put into making it clear for them what it is about and what happens throughout each part of our film and what is the purpose of each part. But I don't really know what we should have improved.

  • On Tuesday we had Drama for Rob's lesson were we first talked to each other while we waited. Then one by one in the silent movie groups with Rob discussed props needed in film and running order of scenes and character roles. What went well was we were sure of what our characters needed props wise and had a clear idea of what the scenes would look like with the props. What we should have improved/ or did not do so well I am not sure but maybe we should have rehearsed the scenes more with the talking in it as for the actual day of filming we were not sure what we should say at certain parts, but I thought it still was really good and I thourghouly enjoyed the directors we filmed with it was all really exciting and I was so happy doing it with the people in my group.
In the afternoon we had Dance with Mandy were we did warm ups for our core muscles and did a simple timed dance routine, we also did a balance exercise with with our eyes closed testing how far we can go (backward-forwards-Left-Right) and discussed ideas i had for the show and rehersal in preperation on Febuary 2nd as we were not ready to show our silent movies and asked Mandy to ask the class who was interested in joinging. What i think we did well was the exercises to warm us up and what we did well but did not prepare so well was the silent movie as at that time we were not really prepared to present it to the teacher and also the speaking side of it, so for next time we need to rehearse it more so it is polished to show it to Mandy.
In the evening we had English with Hailey were we had our Of Mice and Men grades from the essay given to us, then did some questions for example on filling the blanks in a booklet from our teacher from a famous poem and then discussed the poetry line titles from poems as a starter or were given the sheets to start creating the short stories from our booklets which we were given in class from the teacher. What i thought went well was even though it took a while to decide what title to use from the poem lines we had we knew which one to use later and we had different short story ideas in our head but just had to write it on paper to remember them. What i thought i could improve or did not do so well as i thought i don't think their is anything.

  • On Thursday in the morning we had Maths with Janah were we started the lesson revising Fractions of An Amount on the board, we then started a worksheet on another topic and then watched another Maths Watch clip. What i thought i did well was the revision on Fractions of An Amount as i started and got help from people on my table i zoomed through the whole worksheet and understood it confidently, on the other hand what did not go so well was the start as i struggled until i got what to do for next time i should try and do more so i remember the technique i used and understand in the exam so i don't struggle with it later again.
In the afternoon and throughout Becca's Lesson (Sara, Maya,Femi, Darcey and Me) filmed our silent movie with the Meadia Students and Rob, got help with organisation from Maya and Loreena for our make up and some people in the class helped us set up and take back the props but before that we rehearsed with Jardene for the killing scene for her group the rehearsal was with Maya, Sara, Jessica b. and Me volunteered to take part in the practice run of the performance. What i thought went well was we helped each other to make the day easier for each and to make the time fun for the experience of making the silent movies, what did not go so well was that everyone else got bored having to wait and not do much during the lesson. So for next time we should should make everyoneelse have fun in the classroom or do something while they wait not to get bored.

  • On Friday morning we had Maths with Janah were i ran a bit late but we all completed a worksheet, watched a maths watch clip on Decimals, Fractions and Percentages. We then did an exercise on it on the white board with our class and did another worksheet i think on money problems or something. What i thought went well was the technique we learnt to help us with the topic we were learning and we got help or asked for it if we were confused or did not understand what they were saying and what we could do more or better to improve what we were doing is practice the topic more at home as well as learning it in class and doing extra questions to challenge ourselves.

In the afternoon we had Becca were we continued working on the blogs, synopsis of the silent movies step by step and completing or starting a poster on Miley Cyrus or Miacheal Jackson and anything else for example new Smart Target for this coming both Academic and Personal goals. What i thought went well were we knew what we were aiming to improve or do better this year for example improve our punctuality this term ect. What we need to do better or improve more is write down what to write in our blogs so we are not stuck remembering what we did a few days or a week ago.

I then had English were in the class we practised making short stories from the pictures we had infront of us and read one on a worksheet to get an idea of what to do in the exam but better then the example, then we did a fill in the gap worksheet at the start of the lesson before we started the other things. What went well was we had a clear idea from the pictures what to write already as it gave us clues, but on the other hand what we can do better or improve more for next time is plan or write down what it is all about for the actual story step by step so we know what it is about and so we have a clearer idea in our head so we don't get stuck on the content of the end, begginging and start and do a plan on paper in order.

I then had Maths were Imishka and Me did a worksheet on Fraction of Quantity and talked about Drama ect. and as a task in the worksheet we gave another person in the room my own question to test their own knowledge and i got some h/w to complete which i found tricky doing but attempted. What i thought went well was i remembered the techniques to use in the question and asked for help if i did not understand something and something i can do better next time or improve on is working a bit more indepentely and getting the teacher to check it afterwards and explain to me again to see if i have understood this time round.

Synopsis for Silent movie Tuesday 12th January 2016.

  •  The first scene in the silent movie is when the highness in the throne (Maya) asks the bad devil (sara) to sacrifice a human called Sophie (Yasemin) and bring her to the highness.

  • The second scene was when Femi comes in as an angel and tries to stop the plan of what will happen later.

  •  In the third scene I was in bed having a bad dream, I woke up from shock and saw the bad devil (Sara) and imagine her talk in my mind. While at the same time my friend (Darcey) comforts me and gives me a glass of water but before that, walks to the kitchen to grab it and by that time the bad Devil (Sara) turns my friend (Darcey) to a Zombie.

  • Scene 4:Then my friend, who know is a Zombie has the mission of chasing after me but collapses on the run from exhaustion and later so do I but rather funnily trip over my legs.

  • Scene 5: I am then in bed while (Femi) the Angel and (Sara) the Devil argue and she puts a spell on him with the box and I try to escape the situation by crawling around the bed and window, while she punishes him and as a consequence of the punishment turns him too an animal.

  • Scene 6: Then the Leader (Maya), (Sara), (Darcey) and (me) as Sophie are together as they captured me and as a result turned me into a Zombie and it finishes with a massive cliff-hanger.

Monday 4th until Friday 8th January 2016.  What we did this week in lessons?

On Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday we did not have any college as we still had Christmas/ New year holidays and were all busy doing things

But on Thursday we started school were in the morning we did not have Maths  as the day before we were told we had no Maths due to our teacher having some induction programme, But after had Drama were went over scenes and listed on paper the props we needed. On the other hand, we also re discussed our story board in our group and another person called Maya joined the group we discussed the story with her first and rearranged the story from before so it was a bit different to what we originally planned/ came up with. What I thought went well was the discussion we had and that we agreed as a team on making it so everyone has a good role in the movie, but in contrast what did not go to well as we planned it was deciding on what e should change and what we should do it on when we changed  the story a bit.

We then had tutorial were we were told to create a poster for the artist we chose (Miley Cyrus). So we started creating posters on our celebrities working on the teaser/ original concert poster idea using a range of fonts, colourful backgrounds and titles and then the teacher presented and shared both groups work and we got feedback and their opinion on ours and we did the same to theirs. What went well was the enthusiasm we showed when creating them throughout the lesson, but the thing that did not work so well was the energy we showed during the discussion as a class which I think we can improve our confidence to talk or not be shy to give your say on what you thought on the work we did.

On Friday we had Maths in the morning were we revised pie charts and one type of fractions, after watched a clip on Maths watch on what we learnt and then by the teacher were tested on what we learnt and what we knew on the topic at first I struggled but with Edwards clear explanation I understood it and went through it quickly which I thought went well and what did not go so well was not understanding the method/ concept of what I was learning so for when we do fractions next I will revise or go over the strategy so I know it 100% next time. In the afternoon I had tutorial were  we did the application on the next year of performing Arts in preparation for the audition and next step ahead for after level 2 and so I am able to get a place and am prepared for what is to come even though we did not have a teacher. What went well was that Darcey and Jessica explained to me if I did not understand something and what did not go so well was I don't think much except for it was a bit noisy as some students were watching a scary movie and the noise in the background was loud but that did not bother me.
